Time to get started on photographer research

Yep, it's that time already. Your first research assignment needs to be posted to your blog by 8:00am on Friday 2/19.

You may research a photographer of your choice. I only ask that you research someone you've not done before, and not someone you are very familiar with.

The requirements:

* 5-8 sentences about your subject's life, influences, etc.
* 8-12 sentences about your subject's photographic work... what they photographed, why they photographed it, and your thoughtful response to the work you have seen
* 5 of your subject's images, with 2-3 sentences of your evaluation of/response to each one.

Check out some of your classmates' blogs for some really strong examples of how to do this.

For this first one you can (but are not required to) start with an artist you found on our library visit. If you are looking for someone to research, you could start here: http://www.masters-of-photography.com/index.html

This listing seems somewhat male-centric; if you're looking for a female photographer there are several on this list, or you could also check out Ruth Bernhard, Laura Gilpin, Susan Meiselas, Gertrude Kasebeir, etc.

Welcome back, Foundations 2

I'm so happy to have you all back in my class, and back in the darkroom. I hope you're as excited about this term as I am.

almost to the finish line...

...but a number of you still owe me journals, observations, or research assignments. Get them to me before it's too late! The deadline for work posted to the blog is Tuesday 5/26 at 5 pm.

Research

Most of you who did the research assignment #1 did well. Some of you just needed to pay a bit more attention to the guidelines. Those of you who have not done it yet: get on the ball.

A number of students did very nice work. If you're looking for an example, check out Abby's, Nat's, Emma's, or those of a number of your other classmates who excelled on this first one.

Remember that your second is due a week from today.

Project Proposals

Please start thinking about your final project topic, which should relate in some way to time. You will be posting a written project proposal that explains your idea and how you plan to go about executing it. This really only needs to be about a paragraph long, but I would like to see some good specifics. These must be posted by the beginning of class on Monday, 4/13 (C & Y blocks) or Tuesday, 4/14 (Z block). Please feel free to come to me with ideas beforehand...
